Import Export Code (IEC): How to Register and Why Every Indian Exporter Needs It
The Import Export Code (IEC) is the 10-digit licence required to export or import goods from India. Without it, no bank will process your export payment and no customs authority will clear your shipment.
What Is the Import Export Code (IEC)?
The Import Export Code (IEC) โ sometimes called the IE Code โ is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is mandatory for any business or individual who wishes to export goods from India or import goods into India on a commercial basis.
The IEC serves as the universal identification number for Indian exporters and importers in all customs, banking, and trade-related transactions. Every export shipment, every foreign currency receipt, and every DGFT application requires the IEC to be quoted.
Who Needs an IEC?
- Any business entity (proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private limited company, public company, trust, HUF) that wants to export goods commercially
- Individual artisans or craftsmen who sell directly to international buyers
- E-commerce sellers on global platforms (Amazon Global, Etsy) shipping from India
- Manufacturers who supply to export houses
Exemptions: Exporters of certain goods for personal use (not for sale), government departments, and certain notified categories do not require an IEC. However, virtually all commercial handicraft exporters need one.
Documents Required for IEC Registration
- PAN card (of the business entity or individual)
- Aadhaar card of the proprietor/authorised signatory
- Bank account details and cancelled cheque (the bank account must be in the name of the applicant)
- Address proof of the business (electricity bill, rental agreement, or property document)
- Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) โ Class 2 or higher, for online application
- GSTIN (recommended, though not mandatory for IEC)
How to Apply for IEC Online โ Step by Step
- Visit the DGFT portal: dgft.gov.in
- Register on the portal using your PAN number and mobile/email
- Log in and navigate to Services โ IEC โ Apply for IEC
- Fill in the application form (ANF 2A) with business details, bank details, and director/partner information
- Upload the required documents
- Pay the application fee: โน500 (online payment via net banking, credit/debit card, or UPI)
- Submit and verify using OTP or DSC
- The IEC is typically issued within 2โ3 working days as a digitally signed certificate in PDF format
Key Facts About IEC
- Lifetime validity: The IEC does not expire and does not require renewal (amendment required if business details change)
- One IEC per PAN: Only one IEC is issued per PAN number regardless of how many businesses the person operates
- Mandatory annual update: As of April 2021, IEC holders must update/confirm their IEC details on the DGFT portal every year in AprilโJune, even if no changes are needed. Failure to do so leads to IEC deactivation
- Branch codes: Large exporters operating from multiple locations can get branch codes under a single IEC
- Linked to PAN and GST: The IEC is linked to your PAN, and your GSTIN is automatically linked once GST registration is done
IEC and Export Documentation
The IEC must appear on:
- The commercial invoice (as "IEC No: XXXXXXXXXX")
- The Shipping Bill filed on ICEGATE
- All DGFT applications (RCMC, RoDTEP, Advance Authorisation)
- Bank realisation certificates (BRC/FIRC) for foreign exchange receipts
- Any EXIM Bank or export credit applications
Common Issues and Solutions
- IEC deactivated: Most commonly due to missed annual update. Reactivate by logging into DGFT portal and confirming/updating details.
- Bank details mismatch: The bank account on the IEC must match the account used for foreign exchange receipts. Update through the DGFT portal amendment facility.
- Wrong address: Address on IEC must match GST registration address for IGST refund processing. Amend if different.
- Multiple IEC applications: If you accidentally applied twice, only the first approved IEC is valid. Contact DGFT regional office to cancel the duplicate.
IEC for Handicraft Artisans and Small Vendors
Individual artisans and small handicraft vendors can register for IEC in their personal name or as a proprietorship. There is no minimum turnover requirement. Even if you sell just 50 pieces a year to an overseas buyer, you need an IEC for the transaction to be legally processed through the banking system.
Several artisan cooperatives and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in India operate under a single IEC held by their society or federation โ individual artisan members then export under the umbrella IEC.
Conclusion
The IEC is your passport to global trade. It takes less than โน500 and 3 working days to obtain, but without it, your entire export operation is illegal. Apply before you receive your first international order โ not after. With Tannarix, all registered vendors are guided through the IEC application process as part of onboarding.
